A new legislative proposal that makes mass timber construction a focal point of the federal government’s future building plans is being advanced by a bipartisan coalition. Bill S.1094 — aka the ‘Mass Timber Federal Buildings Act of 2025’ — would establish a split-tiered (e.g. locally sourced and recycled timber) mandate for its preferred use in new federal designs. This comes as timber production in the United States has shown to be operating at just 39% of its full capacity, down from 47% the year before. The Trump Administration last month also signed an executive order that would “free up forests for timber production” nationwide. (h/t WoodCentral)
